Topic:

People will become decisive in a desperate situation

Thesis:

Most of the time, we will be very hesitant in the face of things, because there are so many choices that we can not decisively decide what method we want to do this thing. Many people refer to this situation as “Decidophobia” — that is, in the face of many choices, they will think too much and can’t get a conclusion. But I think it’s just because the situation is not urgent enough. For example, when I go to a new restaurant with a friend and order a meal, when a friend is hesitant about a wide range of dishes, every time I say, “Give you 10 seconds to decide what to eat,and I’ll call the waiter.” Then the countdown starts. At this time, my friends can always choose what they want. So many times it’s not that we really can’t make a decision, it’s just that we don’t need to make a decision,we still have enough time, and we can wait for a while until we have to make a decision.

Passage in Dracula:

Then a wild desire took me to obtain the key at any risk, and I determined then and there to scale the wall again, and gain the Count’s room. He might kill me, but death now seemed the happier choice of evils. Without a pause I rushed up to the east window, and scrambled down the wall, as before, into the Count’s room. It was empty, but that was as I expected. I could not see a key anywhere, but the heap of gold

remained. I went through the door in the corner and Free eBooks at Planet eBook.com 75 down the winding stair and along the dark passage to the old chapel. I knew now well enough where to find the monster I sought.

Relating my potential topic to Dracula:

This passage comes from Dracula’s 4th chapter. Before that, Harker had thought about escaping from the castle, but the wolves outside kept him from going out. The death of the baby in the castle, the three mysterious women, and Dracula’s ability to climb the wall and so on, made Harker’s fear deeper and deeper. He wanted to live, but he did not dare to go to Dracula’s room to find the key. This passage is when Dracula promises to let Harker leave his castle on the next day. But Harker has known so many secrets about Dracula, he understands that he can’t leave easily. And the count doesn’t let Harker leave tonight, but let him leave tomorrow. There must be some problems with this. Harker’s fear forces him to make a bold decision. If this bold action fails, he will even pay the price of death. At this time, the fear of unknown monsters even surpassed death, so that he decided to steal the key tonight. Or get the key and leave, or die normally, even death must be better than what will happen tomorrow.

So I think that when we are in a desperate situation, our instinct will tell us the right way to do it. Most of the time we are hesitant just because we still have time and opportunity to think. Furthermore, I think it is a great ability to decide everything decisively at ordinary times, so that we will not be in a difficult situation because of our indecision, and also enable us to seize more opportunities.
